We have a team of dedicated staff, coaches, and volunteers who make the club a great place to be whether it be during the week in our sessions, or at one of our annual events or competition.
The Whanganui Boys & Girls Gym Club also has a sports accommodation wing attached to our main facility which has been home to many sports teams and visitors to Whanganui. We hold birthday parties each weekend and our Sports Holiday programme for 5 to 13 years runs through each school holiday – we really do have something for everyone here at our club.
Our History
Whanganui Boys & Girls Gym Club was established in 1957 by a then young police constable, Jim Bowley, who was keen to engage young boys in physical fitness and competition. His philosophy “Healthy body-Healthy mind” soon became the club’s motto.
Originally the club held classes on the beach at Castlecliff. In the early 1960’s the arrival from Denmark of Jens and Karen Bukholt bought a new era of gymnastics to Whanganui and by 1978 the club established its own facilities at Springvale Park. Since then WBGGC has developed a significant local, regional, national and international reputation as a centre of excellence for gymnastic training.
The primary focus of the club is the maintenance and enhancement of their local, national and international reputation as a Centre of excellence for young gymnasts. This will be achieved by ensuring that our Club coaches are trained to the highest standard.
